About the event
Sustainability and Environmental Protection: The Basics
What do we mean when we talk about sustainability, and how does Hong Kong create policies to promote sustainability? How should we think about sustainability in our daily lives? What are Hong Kong’s main energy sources, and what will Hong Kong need to do to expand sources of energy to accommodate the pressure of new technologies like AI and crypto currencies? How is Hong Kong acting to preserve its biodiversity? Is there a solution to tackle both climate change and biodiversity loss at the same time?
Register for this lecture and interactive discussion with Prof. Wong and Ms. Tam to hear some answers to these vital questions, and to learn more about what these important topics mean for you and your future.
⊹ This activity will be conducted in English.

Wong was appointed as Secretary for the Environment, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, between 2012 and 2022. During his ten-year tenure as the “environment minister”, Wong as a pioneer initiated a series of sustainability policy blueprints, covering climate actions, energy saving, clean air, popularisation of electric vehicles, waste management and circular economy, and biodiversity conservation, leading Hong Kong towards carbon neutrality before 2050. In 2017, he also created the policy for countryside conservation in remote villages, thereby protecting the natural ecology, revitalising the architectural environment of villages, and conserving cultural resources.
Since late 2022, Wong has served as the chairman of Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation (WZQ), leading rural revitalization projects in both mainland China and Hong Kong through the integration of youth development and low-carbon green transition. In Hong Kong, WZQ has actively participated in the incremental revitalization of Hakka villages in the vicinity of Sha Tau Kok, like Lai Chi Wo, Mui Tsz Lam, Kuk Po and Yung Shue Au.
As a professional architect, Wong has developed expertise on sustainable architecture. He is currently Distinguished Department of Architecture Fellow at HKU, Adjunct Professor at both HKU and CUHK, and Honorary Professor at Hong Kong Chu Hai College. Since mid-2023, he has also been an ambassador of the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong. In mid-2024, his new book Hong Kong Stories in the Journey towards Carbon Neutrality (邁向碳中和 香港人和事) was published.
